Our IoT Heroes: Christian Fotteler - Software Developer
In one of our development teams in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Christian makes data transfer between edge cameras and their digital twins in the cloud smooth and secure.
What were your main reasons and motivations to join us?
During my dual studies in mechatronics with an international technology company, I discovered my passion for programming. Therefore it was a logical decision to start my professional career at Azena. Besides, up to that point, I had only got to know working in a very large company, feeling like a small, insignificant part of the game. At Azena I get the chance to help shape the success story of a young, extremely dynamic start-up.
“The idea of enabling security cameras with AI apps using an Android-based OS fascinated me from day one.”
What are the central values in your working environment?
Azena offers you a great mix of hard work, learning new things every day, and being appreciated for the results you deliver. Everyone always gives their best, which motivates me to put my best into developing a groundbreaking product too. What helps me a lot, especially as a career starter, is that I get the full support I need from the team to add as much value as possible. Making work fun seems to be part of the company DNA.
What superhero power can you draw on when you need it?
A crucial ability of many developers, including myself, is to learn new things quickly and independently without being guided in detail. If you are working on 3 different stories within 3-week sprints using 3 different coding languages, then you need to be able to learn very quickly. In agile teams, you also have to be willing to listen to and learn from others rather than trying to teach you everything yourself. This is where my communicative nature helps a lot.
What are the most interesting topics you will work on here and what will be the hardest tasks to solve?
I am currently working on two components of our IoT ecosystem for security cameras, related to the transfer of data between edge devices and the cloud. One is the reliable synchronization between cameras and their digital twins aiming to make communication between the two as efficient as possible. On the other hand, I'm working on making data transfer to and from the cloud as secure as possible, so hackers have no chance to intrude and manipulate data.
“In our ecosystem every security camera gets a digital twin to make adding and managing AI capabilities as easy and secure
What do you see as the main trends in IoT in a business context and from your perspective as a Developer?
Devices in IoT become more powerful and will perform more tasks previously executed by systems in the cloud. Smart cameras will analyze data and deliver results instead of just providing raw data. With the growing number of edge devices and connections, the requirements for communication security and efficiency will become more complex. At Azena, we aim to ensure that even complex requirements can be easily solved.
Christian, thank you very much for the chat!
