Our IoT Heroes: Abinaya Kumar - Computer Vision Engineer
Azena's approach to reinventing video analytics thrives on the products of a global developer community. Abinaya makes developing for our Application Store as smooth as possible.

What were your main reasons and motivations to join us?
Coming from an Artificial Intelligence (AI) background, I have always been fascinated by the fast-paced research and developments in the field of Computer Vision. Azena has paved the way to turning brand new technical opportunities into products that users can deploy very smoothly, revolutionizing the video surveillance industry with AI. My role as a Computer Vision Engineer with Azena excites me every day because I get to help shape this revolution and have the great opportunity to grow personally in this exciting and cutting-edge domain.
What are the central values in your working environment?
As a small team in the US, we help each other and learn from each other. Here you still experience a real startup feeling, even though Azena has actually outgrown this stage with worldwide operations. Flat hierarchies are not just a label at Azena. We communicate at eye level and everyone is given the freedom to innovate and to contribute their own ideas - all striving to deliver a groundbreaking quality product that has what it takes to take an entire industry to the next level. Everybody burns to take responsibility and drive topics forward. Perfect for people who like to help shape things.
“If you are looking for a professional global company with a special startup feel, Azena is the place to be.”
What superhero power can you draw on when you need it?
Thinking outside the box is part of Azena's DNA and one of my “superpowers” fits this very well: I can go beyond my technical comfort zone at any time, if necessary, to analyze possible solutions and find the best possible one to solve a problem. This gives me a 360-degree view of challenges and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration with other teams. Furthermore, I am a swift learner and can quickly adapt to changing product requirements. Besides, I also regularly keep my team in a good mood by organizing fun team events. Whoever works hard must also have fun, that's what Azena is all about.
What are the most interesting topics you will work on here and what will be the hardest tasks to solve?
As the Azena platform with Operating System (OS) and Application Store for surveillance cameras is constantly evolving, a wide variety of tasks arise. So it never gets boring. Currently, I develop software libraries to ease the app development process for developers. I deal with AI-driven object tracking, investigate the latency of vision models, and analyze best practices for model deployment on our platform. I wouldn't say the “hardest” but the most interesting challenge for me is to transfer and realize existing computer vision solutions to edge applications for cameras.
“We aim to make not only the use of camera apps, but also the development for the Azena Application Store as smooth as possible.”
What do you see as the main trends in IoT in a business context and from your perspective as a Computer Vision Engineer?
I believe AIoT - Artificial Intelligence & IoT - is one of the trending topics in many application areas and industries. Both technologies complement each other and together form the foundation for countless powerful tools and applications to solve various real-world challenges in security, healthcare, transportation, and many other areas where smart video technology can help make operations more efficient and reliable. Azena already has a head-start in AIoT, and I am glad to be one of the contributors to Azena's growth.
Abinaya, thank you very much for the chat!
